She-Hulk WIP 1

It’s an NYCC tradition at this point that I do a She-hulk piece to be released during the weekend. It’s kind of a skill check for me, see how far I’ve come and how far I may yet go. 

Last time I drew Jennifer in her home, relaxing and breaking the fourth wall by reading a book about her. This time I thought I’d show her doing what she’s best, being a lawyer. She-hulk is be best lawyer in comics bar none Matt Murdock is nothing compared to her. She’s beaten him a number of times actually.

As you can tell from the proportions here she’s no saintly flower. She-hulk is as large as life and twice as beautiful. I tried to have her clock in at a good 7-7.5 feet and I think I nailed it. the heels help.

Harley's Goodbye WIP 5

After all the trouble I had with getting the skin painted properly, it’s been a joy to work on anything else. 

The hair is coming out really well so far, I somehow managed to give volume and form to those buns, which frankly surprised me since defined shapes and structures in hair is something i struggle with. Balancing between the flowing nature of air and that fact that it still creates recognizable forms is difficult, This time, however, everything seems to be working out well. I might play with it a little more later on in order to give the blue side of it a bit more blue but since that’s the side that’s going to get the most light and the side its going to be tricky.

I’ve done the traditional Harley Quinn outfit and more modern official variation on the outfit. And also a very much pinup version of the outfit. This time i wanted to do something a little  different. I’m going to be doing my own version of the outfit with a little inspiration from high end motor cycle leather. The idea is going to be to give it a distinctive silhouette and to make it recognizably Harley. Join me as I venture into the world of concept art!

Harley's Goodbye WIP 4

It took me about three hours playing between procreate and Photoshop to get something even close to right for the skin tone of this piece. By turns it looked jaundiced, oversaturated, dull, undersaturated or just bad. I’ve learned two important things. Part of the reason the final product looks so strange is that I’m using too much contract in the pieces. The shadows are too dark, the lights are too light. While this might seem unintuitive, it’s a problem of how the the color layer works that creates something rid looking. in order to fix the problem you have to apply another layers to try and play with the warms and cools of the piece. Honestly, it would be easier to just work in color from the get go and work the lays just based on tone and saturation. But I’m hear now and i’ll just have to deal with it. so far it’s ok, but I really don’t like relying on photo shop for these kinds of alterations. Feels a bit like cheating. 

I do still feel really good about the silhouette and the over-all composition. I’m especially happy with how her face is turning out. The original line art has touch of madness to her lips, but I think I’ve managed to add just that trace of a grin that i was looking for. The hint of gleeful madness that, balanced against her brilliant mind and deep compassion really makes Harley stand out as a character.

Harley's Goodbye WIP 2

In terms of color and story telling I’m going for a contracts in warms and cools. Here Harley is still in the gray value stage  but when she is skinned and when i can put a costume on her she is going to be in very warm tones. Her skin is play and her cosine is going to have a lot of bright red. Plus theres that alone head of hers. The background by contrast is going to be in shade of liking green and purple, Joker’s colors. I want her out of place and singular, if Joker is poison, she’s the anti-toxin.

Harley’s Goodbye WIP1

As I ramp up to New York Comic-con I thought it was time to get back to basics for me and do another Harley Quinn piece. I do this at least once a year. I’ve done a few different takes on Harley over the years from faithful adaptations to even making someone I know into Harley. That’s why I felt ok with going a little wild in my ideation stage. I just kind of played with it until her face started to form and then a mood for her. I took the mood from her and exploded it outward for the back ground. I want it to be hard and dark and chaotic and I want her to be a center of still ness in the middle.
