I could have gone with one of the more normal outfits for Triss but that’s just not how I roll. I loved the look of her outfit in the DLC available with Wild Hunt and I knew that was what I was going to be basing mine off.

Both the main outfit and the Variant are variations on the wrap dress so I’m going to get to play with a lot of folds and wrinkles and that’s going to be a lot of fun. I don’t normally do clothing that’s too loose so this’ll be a good challenge for me. I’m using Krys Deke’s brushes for this part of the work and it seems to be working well so far. Th variant is going to have detached sleeves so that’s going to be very different because its even looser than the dress. Eh, I’ll figure it out.

In green because of course.

I’m very happy with how this has turned out so far. The change from black and white to color can be a little jarring at times because of how yur bran tried to adjust, but this was really good. Adding saturation went well and now her skin had a really nice vibrancy. Triss is kind of ruddy skinned so that it works well that she’s got a bit of red and orange under her skin. 

Even with that, her hair really stands out. It’s bright and vibrant and I really think this may be the best hair I’ve done to date. Always room to improve, but this is really good so far.

The one thing that I think I really need to tweak are her eyes. I just think I needs to add a little shine to them.

The anatomy here was a little difficult. This particular three-quarter turn of the body is something that I find particularly difficult for some reason. One boob is in profile and the other one is almost front facing. And then there’s the rise and fall of the abs, and since I’ve foolishly gone back to wanting to do abs I have to put them in with some level of definition and that means the anatomy has to be right.

Overall, I’m happy with how it’s turned out so far. I had to make a lot of adjustments but in the end, I think it’s as good as it can be at this stage. Everything is in the right place and with the right level of shine and curve. She looked like she’s leaning back against something. I may have to soften the harshness of the transition from the ribcage to the abs tough because right now it’s a little too much like a break, should be more of a flow.

I do really like how the shadows are supporting the hair right now. Even before I render that out it looks like it’s sitting on top of her head.

In terms of composition I’ve decided to place Triss in a study. She’s not an out in the field kind of girl. Plus, this will let me do some interesting things with those panels set into the walls. No, they are not just windows. 

 I want her in a more relaxed pose, looking at the camera and beckoning. She’s being sultry but anyone who knows her knows how dangerous an invitation that is. Which is what I’m going for here. I want to have this piece work on two levels. If you don’t know the character it’s just good art. If you do. You’re slightly unsettled. 

 For model I’m going with Marta the Martian, a model I’ve been following for a while know and have always wanted to feature in one of my pieces and just never got around to. I couldn’t find the right piece.

Witcher is another one of those series that I started but never finished. I’d been hearing good things about Wild Hunt for years before I decided to pick up a copy. I’ve interacted with the world mostly through the lore and the art. And one of my favorite pieces of art of the series is Triss Merigold. I love a good redhead. If she’s also a dangerous and badass sorceress all the better. 

 Seriously, I really like her in the series even though I haven’t finished it.

For the outfit I’m going with something completely different. The original pinup n playboy was nude of course, so that give a lot of room to play with. Since I have to do an SFW version for Instagram, I figured why not do a little mixing and matching. I’m doing a completely backless apron type top, a little tight to the chest but held on tony through the metal collar and flexible metal ties. I’m going to be matching that with some boyshorts, not that you can tell from this angle, and stockings. I think this is going to do a nice little bridging of the gap between the classic and the modern. The fantasy of the wife wearing nothing but the apron but done in a modern style because you know it’s going to be rendered is Harley’s signature red and blue leather.

The alternate version is going to be a closer throwback to classic Harley. It’s going to look like a bodysuit but its actually going to be two pieces over that I’m going to throw a nice simple one armed shawl type deal rendered in red and blue but with a touch of sheerness to it.

So, on advice of a good friend, I made some changes here. Two specifically. 

One was to her mouth. Originally, I was just going to do just a wide grin for Harley, but my friend pointed out that I could go further add more personality to her expression and the acting of the scene. She suggested that I look at Harley’s scene from Suicide Squad where Harley does the thing with her tongue and it’s both playful and threatening at the same time. I thought that was the perfect expression to kick this piece up a notch and add more Harley to this pinup.

The other thing, and this is still in process, is the hair. Originally, I was going to do the blue side as a big curl going around itself. But looking at it, the hair on the red side looked much better with its single back curl. I’m going to be doing that. On the blue side to make them match more.

Working pretty directly off the classic Marilyn pinup made getting the anatomy here simple. This is a really brightly lit piece with most of the lighting coming from the upper left-hand side of the image. This makes for few hard shadows and more definition using the lighting in the scene. It’s playful yet loose. The fact that it’s just against a curtain makes the background simple to work her into.

Since I did a Harley piece fairly recently I decided to go in a completely different direction this time. That one was more of a costume redesign. This is going to be something else. I’m going to be recreating the famous Marilyn Monroe spread in the first ever playboy. I just thought it would be a fun idea to throw Harley into the scene and see what it would look like. 

I’m basing the body composition on Marilyn but of course the face is Margot Robbie. Normally I would put in a big complicated scene where but that pictorial famously only had her against a silk curtain and this time I’m going for classic but with a twist. I really like the lines here and I need to make sure I follow through properly. 

It’s hard to overstate how big Marilyn Monroe being the centerfold of that first issue was. Playboy was actually in danger of being cancelled even before the first issue because no one believed it could work as a concept. Nude women presented as high art? Nude women as classy? Couldn’t work. Marilyn Monroe was a huge star, already a sex symbol. Her being in the magazine made people buy it and see what it could be.

With the new move coming out I just had to do a piece for Harley Quinn. I don’t even care if the move is good or not, I just need an excuse to do another Harley piece. It’s so cool that a character I was alive when she was created is getting such a great run now of interest and getting new media about her. I’ve loved her ever since I was a seven-year-old boy in in 1992 when she first came on the TV. Now I just want to do her justice.

Given the bath scene, I obviously had to go with something more like a swimsuit for the costuming her. I’m making it a one piece so that it can better echo the Demon Slayer uniform she wears; the lighter white elements will really help with that. For the Alternate version, I really don’t know I might wo with another swimsuit but I may also go another way. This is the fun of redesigning characters, you can surprise yourself.

I’m loving the brightness of this piece. Both I her skin tone and the environment. Have a brightness to them that I don’t’ normally manage to get in my work. It’s not going to stick because of the specific lighting situation I’m going for here, candle light. But it almost makes me want to change the idea and made this a day scene. Although having fireflies in the background floating through a garden sounds really cool too.

Getting the hair right here was a challenge and I had to do something completely different from my usual process. I normally work in full color for the hair but with the transition here from her pink hair to green I needed to do something else. What I did was render the hair in gray scale but clipped a coloring layer above it with the appropriate colors in the right places. That way, when I changed the lighting of the hair the color adjusted automatically depending on the section. This was actually a really interesting process and I may try doing it again. Working with values alone for skin has been really valuable and maybe I can stretch that out. I don’t think I’m ready to go full out grayscale for the whole piece but parts of it may be helpful.

The skin valuations and body here are just excellent. She’s got the right amount of saturation and life in her skin. I can see areas to improve but she’s really good where she is.

With this piece I’m going for something of a different look than I have done lately, maybe it was the Mr. Darcy piece I did last week but I don’t feel like doing super defined abs. In this piece you can see that she’s still well defined and athletic, but she’s not as svelte as some of my other pieces. I like a variety in the women that I draw. Lord of different shapes, lots of different kinds of beautiful. 

And I really like this shape. Mitsuri is supposed to be rounded and soft and I think that comes through here. Not to put too fine appoint on it, but this is really one of the better bodies I’ve drawn. She has the right level of rounding and weight where needed. And I like how the hands have turned out here. I can see a few spots where I’ll need to add some darker lines to finish defining forms but they’re not many. Mostly around the left beat to make it clear that the hand holding the braid is pressing into it.

Most crucial will be her face. Mitsuri is known for a kind of crazy expression in her eyes. Almost too wide or even maddened. That’s going to be a challenge to balance with what is supposed to be a soft feeling to the piece.

Compositionally with this piece I want to do something in the theme of transitional or liminal points. Here Mitsuri is half way in the water but that’s just the most obvious thing. She’s also half way through undoing her braids so that she can wash her hair in the tub. The scene is split, not evenly, between the water down below and the sky above. She’s getting in the bath after a long day, unwinding herself in a physical way by undoing her braids and in a more metaphorical ways by allowing herself to relax in the warm water. 

I think you can tell by the styling of the background that I’m not going with time period arcuate version of Mitsuri. Because I haven’t finished the series I’m happy to play with a few things here I can imagine this as modern day when the Demon slayer Corps are still around and fighting demons. Mitsuri is still the Pillar of Love. This place in is their headquarters somewhere up in the mountains. Also, now that I think about it, this may not be that inaccurate. So far, I’ve seen from scenes in Tokyo that Japan is probably somewhere in the early 20th century. They could easily have this kind of bath setup somewhere in there. 

Ok just googled at the risk of spoiling myself, it takes place between 1912 and 1915. So, I’m going to say that this could easily be in the time. I’m still thinking modern day though, because I want to put her in modern clothing though.

I don’t usually do pieces from media that I haven’t finished yet, but I’ve really been enjoying Demon Slayer and I wanted to do a piece from that. You might ask why I haven’t just finished it and then done this piece, it’s all out. Simple answer, it’s not out in English dub yet and if it’s at all possible I’d rather watch something dubbed than not. I find text distracting in a visual medium. Takes too much bandwidth. 

Anyway, Mitsuri was the obvious choice for a first go at a piece from this series. She’s got the most pinup character model and more importantly she’s not one of the central characters that might get screwed up mid-way during the show. I love the aesthetics of this show and I want to see what I can do along these lines.

For the costume, I decided to rip Edge’s style again and go with a long leather coat over tights. I don’t know where blue and white came from but they’re the colors that came to me for Darcy. This is actually going to be a relatively simple build from this point forward because there are so few costume elements but that just means that I have more room to play around with them. Maybe do an interesting lining for the coat. Maybe alternate designs on the leggings. There’s a world of possibility out there right now.

So, a couple of things. I’m still really good with the musculature of the body. Here the minimal lighting actually turned out to be a blessing because it meant the work went faster. I’m normally very defined with my shadows since they’re what I primarily use to define form. However, here, there aren’t that many shadows so it’s really a study in how to defined form with minimal boundaries. I have a lot more room to play with in the highlights but I have to remember not to go too far. He’s not supposed to be Machoman Randy Savage level of oily after all that’s what you get if you highlight him too much.

As for the face, I’m torn. On the one hand, I think the eyes are spot on. He’s nailing that soft aesthetic I’m going for. Sad puppy dog and all that. But I’m not sure about his mouth. I gave him soft lips and parted them to make them softer but I’m not sure about how natural they look. I’m not sure if they’re too pale or too saturated or If I’m just worried because they need to say a lot without saying anything. 

Makeup really helped this part of the process. Wrestlers wear makeup, it’s a thing. It makes your facial features stand out in an arena with unflattering lighting and on television, all things that might wash things out. I added eyeshadow to make sure his eyes popped and a touch of lipstick so the cheap seats can see when his mouth is moving.

The hair falls from yes! to eh. I like where the hair is at the top because it’s getting highlighted by that overhead lighting and all the entrance flair, but I just couldn’t get those crinkly little twists at the ends like Edge has. I have no  idea how to do it without going full on curly and that would just be too much.

This is kind of s weird lighting situation. A wrestling ring is normally very brightly lit and mostly from above. What that means in practice is that there are minimal shadows to work with to define the body’s forms and structures. I’ve tried to define Mr. Darcy well as I could, given this situation, but really, it’s the highlight here that are doing the heavy lifting. 

Disclaimer aside, I do like how his musculature is represented here. He’s clearly defined, more defined that I would make a female character unless she was canonically ultra-ripped, but that’s how male wrestlers look. I’m honestly less worried about the forms of the body than I am the face. This is a piece that requires a lot of acting and all of that is going to come through in the face. I’m really sweating things like just the shape of his face and eyes. And the lighting isn’t helping.

I went through a journey with generating the idea for this piece. When I first heard Mr. Darcy my immediate reaction was…What? What am I going to do with that?!?! What does Darcy even look like? I didn’t watch this movie. Am I going to have to watch the move? Wait, no, it’s audio. I can make him look however I want. Yeah, but you would have used Keira Knightly. That’s because it’s Keira Knightly. If you have a chance to use her do so. So, what’s Darcy like in the flash fiction? Kind of a sad boy because he really wants to tag with Lizzy but she’s not having it. Huh, ooh, wait, sad boy, sad ripped boy. But what style of wrestling attire? You know what you must do. Who said that? It’s Edge. It was always Edge. Yes, voice in my head. This is sad boy Edge.

And that’s how we got here. Mr. Darcy is on the steps leading to the ring looking up at Elizabeth, asking her to let him be her tag partner. He’s wearing a long coat because of course he is. I went with a shaggier longer hair than would be accepted in Victorian England but this is wrestling, and I heavily borrowed from Edge. He’s going to be wearing long tights in the SFW version because that gives me room to print stuff on his leggings.
