So, this is a weird one. I grew up watching wrestling but I’ve been a lapsed fan for more than ten years now I think. Ever since I moved out and stopped watching with my brother. Lately though, I’ve been listening to a wrestling podcast for the sole reason that some of my favorite podcasters have started a wrestling podcast. And it is delightful. Meganbob is the epitome of a new fan coming into a nerdy thing, bubbling with enthusiasm, curiosity, and just that hint of fear that it’s too big. Miles is the platonic ideal of an experienced fan, the opposite of a gatekeeper, a laughing imp who can’t wait to show off what’s great about this thing. Also, almost dying to rush ahead but knowing going too fast defeats the purpose. This Podcast has fallen in a select category for me of things where I enjoy the analysis of the thing more than the actual thing. Even if you’re not a wrestling fan I cannot recommend this show more. Yes, I am repurposing my review of the show. I started writing this and basically just copied over. I regret nothing!

Anyway, I offered to do a fanart for the show and they went with one of the running elements of the show. A Pride & Prejudice themed wrestling plotline. Yes. Coming to the ring, hailing Pemberley England, weighing in at 220 is Mr. Darcy!

The other part of aging the character up for me is going different with their costumes. Right, it’s totally a practical reason, not that I just like redesigning things. 

I’m giving Froppy a more leotard kind of costume, huh, I’ve done a couple of these in the last few weeks. Anyway, I went with something lighter for Froppy. The benefit of something like this is that it’s way more maneuverable that her full body unitard. Here she’s sacrificing overage and protection for speed and agility but I feel like that’s a choice she might make as she grows. I can also see her getting on board with Midnight’s movement to deregulate women’s costumes. That’s just some straight up sexist shit. 

Her leggings are more protective because they’re her primary tool and she needs to have them reinforced. The yellow feet on the costume, like on her regular costume are there to provides more leverage to her leaps and help her stick to walls. I’m honestly not sure which I like better, this one or the one that I’ve been thinking of more as her alternate costume. 

Hmm may need to make some choices.

And how we see her face. This came out really well. Her skin loos vibrant and has interesting variation the forms and shadows are right and the hints of highlighting from where the skin would be redder or getting more sunlight are good. At least as good as I’m able to do at my current skill level anyway. 

What I’m really proud of here, however is the face and hair. I wanted to convey the frog aspects of her nature as best as I could while staying on human model and I think it worked out. It was subtle things too, the level of white I left around her irises and the relative size of the irises. The flicker of her tongue around her lips. She’s clearly a beautiful human woman but I managed to add a few subtle twists to her to convey that she’s not quite human.

The hair came out really well too. Its fortunate that she has mostly straight hair but that last twist at the end was a pain in the ass to who it twisting around. In the end I did this weird knot thing. May go back and change it, may not. Kid of like it where it is that you don’t know exactly how that thing works. Which is how anime hair should be. Confusing and in full defiance of physics.

I honestly couldn’t be happier with how the anatomy came out here. It’s got the right level of form and substance and everything looks like its where it’s supposed to be. I didn’t go to heavily with the more frog-like anatomy features just because I don’t know how much of that is Froppy and how much of that is her suit. I do know that she’s doesn’t have super huge feet, that’s her costume adjusted to give her more leverage. Her hands aren’t that big either, even though you can’t really see them here, that’s her gloves and the way she holds them, exaggerating how big they look. 

What’s amazing to me about that is how @horikoshiko_ has managed to convey so much of the frog aesthetic in her without really changing her from a normal human model. It’s mostly done just through posture and facial composition. Her face is going to be its own thing since I don’t usually go too deep into Anime stylization.

For the composition of this piece I wanted to play with a couple of different things. Froppy’s power is frog so she’s supposed to be very acrobatic and free. That’s why I decided to put her high up on the edge of a construction site. I imagine that this is at the edge of a battle and she’s hanging out waiting for her moment to leap back in. For a model I went with Niss Suicide of the @Suicidegirls. She’s gorgeous to begin with and when I came across picture of her viewed from above I was inspired. Plus I think she’s about the right age Froppy is supposed to be in her mid 20’s here since I never do younger character at their actual ages in their source media.

Fun fact, I’ve been a long time Member of Suicide girls and I go out to see @blackheartburlesque just about every time they come to NYC. The have fantastic models to begin with since they don’t have a set body type and a lot of times they are in interesting positions. Highly recommended.

This piece is going to be in a lot of primary bright colors, which I’m happy about. The world of My Hero Academia is bright and vibrant and I want this to feel like it belongs there.

Floppy (My Hero Academia) WIP 1

My Hero Academia is such a fun universe. It’s a really interesting meditation on how a society organizes itself when a majority of its population has superpowers. But that’s’ really the stuff that’s happening in the background. Really why you watch is the characters. Each one of them is distinct and loveable. Except for that one who should die in a fire and before forgotten. I won’t even dignify him with a name.

Anyway, children who should die in a fire aside, one of the absolute best characters is Tsuyu Asui, Sue if you’re a friend, Froppy if you’re looking for the Rain Day Hero. She’s awesome! She’s such a level headed and down to earth character that it’s amazing she’s in an anime. No tragic backstory, no psychosis, just a relatively sane person. Relatively, she still regurgitates hers stomach on occasion and I can’t honestly believe that wouldn’t leave a mark on your mind. 

I related to her even more when I found out that that she’s an oldest sibling.

The one time I felt alienated from her was the scene in the hospital when everyone was gearing up to try and go rescue Bakugo and she said that trying would make them as bad as the villains. Maybe it’s the crazy in me but I can’t agree. The way their society treats superpowers is fucked up and I just want her to see that and break out of it. But at the same time, I get where she is, she’s young and from her perspective she hasn’t had reason to question it yet. The scene after that where she breaks down in front of everyone is just heartbreaking on a number of levels.

As always, now anyway, I’m not going to be going traditional with Ann’s outfit. The Panther costume is great on its own but it’s also a little plain and if I’m going to be working on it I need to make it my own. So, I’m actually going to go for a two-piece number consisting of leather leotard and pants. The leotard is going under the pants and is going to be cut high on the waist to show the angle of her hip rising up. I think I’m going to go traditional with the mask and just make it a little sharper in places, the ears and the nose. No idea if I’m going to keep the zippers or not. 

For the alternate version I might make something that looks a little more Catwoman. Or I might make something completely different, maybe a casual outfit.

Going from grayscale to full color on this one makes a world of difference, not that it was necessarily easy to get there. 

When I took off the greyscale the skin tone was off. Too tanned to be on model for Ann. So, I had to make adjustments. Desaturating the skin just a bit and raising the brightness helped with how dark her skin was feeling but it left her looking waxy. Fortunately, that’s why the next step is playing with an overlay layer in order to add in some saturation to her skin. Why desaturate her skin just to add saturation back in one step later? Because the new overlay layer is in a different hue value. I add in reds for areas that have more blood flow like around her hears, eyes and nose her hands and breasts and knees. I add in touches of light blue to cool shadows. Re result is a much more balanced effect than the mono hue that I get when the saturation layer is first taken off.

The hair and eyes here were very important. I want to make sure that Ann, has a look of danger and invitation as well so her expression was a class in subtlety. There is the crinkling of the bridge of her nose, the narrowness of her eyes and still there is the small touch of just the slightest of smirks on her lips. Hopefully, I got it right and it reads. The hair was just its own thing. Hair with big structures in it like this was kind of a trip to work on because you have to do a lot of it with selections and working in stages. This required about six stages and three hours to get to where it is. That said, I’m satisfied that I got across Ann’s platinum blond locks and pigtails.

The anatomy here came out mostly really well. She has the right level of form and roundness where appropriate. Given the angle of her torso in relation to her hips I wanted to make sure and properly express the fold in her waist and the rise of her hips. 

The other thing I wanted to do was to preserve the look of her hands. For one I think I for the hands to where they look like they have fingers and not slicks at their end. Their posing may be a little boring but it’s not bad. And it’s something I can fix down the line in the refining process. 

I’m not 100% sure I’m going to like the saturation of the skin underneath because I think my color swatch has a bit too much shade in it but fortunately, again, that’s something that can be fixed in post.

I didn’t do Ann or my first piece because, well she didn’t win the vote. But here she offers us a chance to try something different to contrast the last piece. My Mo Motoko x Futaba piece was a yuri piece where the characters were playing off one another. Ann here is doing something different. She’s singular and her body is cutting diagonally across the frame. Whereas in the last piece the center of the image was left empty here she’s the center, she’s taking up space and you have to deal with it. She’s even covering up the symbol behind her so you have to deal with her as an obstacle to something behind her if you wanted to see thy symbol or even the city beyond. Conceptually she’s the woman taking up space 

In terms of her characterization and body language I wanted to play up the cat part of her not going to lie, I was looking at my cat when I thought of this. She’s a big cat all slinky self-satisfied languor just draping herself on this couch by this window. Her expression is somewhere between come here and fuck off but it’s still somehow magnetic. 

Of course, the hair is going to be a challenge. I’m not great at fixed structures like Ann’s ponytails but I can’t not do it without them. I’m also going to be doing a dramatic side swoop thing like some of the hair in the front escaped and she’s looking at you partially through the dangling strands.

And we’re back in the world of Persona 5. I loved working on the last piece that I did in this universe, my Motoko x Futaba piece from early last summer. So, it was only a matter of time before I got back here again. The ideas behind this world are just cool. One of the things that you talk about when discussing magic systems is making the metaphorical the literal and Personal is about taking that metaphor and taking it literally. It realizes the meta physical and makes you fight it.

For the outfit, I didn’t want to go with anything like her traditional outfits or ever her Rebels outfit. The whole idea behind this piece is that she’s in a completely different place. So, why would she be wearing Jedi Robes or armor on a day like this?

For her top I went with a knitted top, maybe n the color here or in something more of a russet to echo the fact that in the original show her outfit had a lot of red cloth in it. Let us not morn the tube-top. I’m going to be using a knit pattern because I want it to look like it has weight and girth. I don’t normally do that so I thought it’d be fun to try. Still fairly tight though.

The pants are going to the Star Wars equivalent of soft leather. Mid-level shine and molded to fit her body snuggly. I don’t see her getting too loss with her clothing choices. Comfort is one thing but mobility is something else. 

The bracers on her arms and legs are just part of who she is. Without them I imagine it would be a little like walking around without a watch on if you’re used to always wearing on. The legs bracers are going to be fishnet. No real reason other than that I like them and they remind me of Naruto and I like to imagine that Ahsoka would like it and would like to show off her legs a little.

Vanity is only a sin to those who recognize sin.

I’m surprised with how well the skin came out here. It’s not too saturated, which could have easily happened given that her skin tone is alien, and it has the right level of rounding where it needs to. 

I wound up redoing the joint of her shoulder and breast a couple of times because it kept feeling just a bit off. It’s one of those weird angles that it’s really hard to find reference for and you just wind up redoing and redoing until it feels right. It feels right where it is. Again, I’m weirdly really happy with how the feet came out in this piece. Her toes are rounded and mobile and she really looks like she’s balancing on them.

The headpiece was where I came across my first mistake. Yes, ever. I found the experience both refreshing and off-putting. Lol. No seriously, the angles of her head horns were all off. In profile her hones would almost be hiding one another. But I drew them like they would both be almost completely visible. Corrected the problem and went on to shading. And damn am I happy with how well it came out. The headpiece has the right level of shine to it to show that it has form and that the texture is a bit different from her skin. It’s a bit glossier than her skin because it has a higher level of creatine. Or something. Either way, I wanted it to be glossier and I got it.

The anatomy here has turned out really well so far. There is a suitable amout of tention in her limbs for the stretch and she’s got the right level of musculature for someone who has spent their life in a very physically demanding profession but isn’t really a bodybuilder. 

I like how the legs and arms have turned out. She’s built along the lines of a dancer. Which makes sense since her fighting style is very acrobatic. It’s going to be interesting to see where I am once I take off the saturation layer and I can see what her skin tones look like. She’s a Togruta so her skin tones range from orange to red.

I also have to do the markings on her face, and headpiece. And the crown piece and the dangling necklace thing. Lots to do that might make up for the fact that I don’t get to do hair in this piece.

For the composition of this piece I wanted to see Ahsoka in a place I don’t think she was ever allowed to get to in cannon. A place of comfort and happiness. As much as I love Ahsoka’s arc, very little of it involves her being happy. Strong, brave, resourceful, yes. Happy not so much. So, I imagined a world where she got to be happy. 

Anakin followed her lead out of the order but they didn’t give up the fight. They started their own mercenary/security company and were hugely successful. How could they not when the company was led by heroes for the clone wars and one of them was now openly married to a senator. The Jedi weren’t happy, but they don’t get a vote. Besides without Anakin the Jedi were able to take down Chancellor Palpatine even though it was after he gave Order 66. With the ranks decimated the Jedi lost a lot of power and have faded from the limelight. In the meantime, the Open Circle Company’s ranks have swelled with clones. They were discharged after it was discovered that they were implanted with control chips and weren’t responsible for enacting Order 66. On top of that force sensitives have come flocking to because there’s no one else to teach them. They take on anyone who want to learn and don’t preach.

This is Ahsoka waking up on a morning off aboard their flagship, the Wanderer. No contracts to fulfil today, no students to teach, they’re off getting some survival training with Captain Rex. She’s having a lazy morning without the hub. She might go down to Naboo and annoy Anakin and play with her godchildren Luke and Leia. For now though, she’s just enjoying a good first thing in the morning stretch.

Ahsoka Tano is one of those characters that had to grow on me over time. I watched the Clone wars CGI cartoon first run and even went to the movie premier that was really just the first three episodes. So, I got to meet Ahsoka when she first came out. And I hated her. She was the annoying tag long kid who thought she was better than she was and just generally intruded on any scene she was a part of. But over time my feeling changed as she changed and grew. 

She had to learn the lessons of loss and failure and getting back up. She had to grow into a warrior and hone that enthusiasm into a focused intensity. Through her we got to see the Anakin the rest of the Star Wars galaxy knew before Darth Vader, the Hero. And I use the capital advisedly because while I wouldn’t use that word for any of the other Jedi I would use it for him. It was no wonder he didn’t talk about her in Revenge of the Sith. He was still suffering from the loss of what was a combination of his little sister and daughter. Family.

When she left the Jedi order at the end of the series I honestly don’t know why Anakin didn’t leave himself. It would have made perfect sense given his arc up to that point and it would have solved so many problems down the line. Or made things worse, I’m not sure which.

When she came back in rebels I literally cheered to see this character I loved all grown up and taking charge. Especially when she revealed she wasn’t a Jedi. She never went back to the order but she kept up the fight. Again Anakin, my dude, here his your example. The children will lead the way.

I was going to give Mewtwo a big set of boots. Something properly metal looking. But…but…just look at those feet. Lol. I couldn’t resist showing them off. I’m going for a really metal outfit here so it’s going to have studs and leather everywhere. The pants are probably going to be the most interesting thing because most of the image is legs but lets have some fun with it anyway.

I didn’t manage to fuck it up! Lol. Honestly, the color here came out really well. There is just enough saturation where it should be to give you the feel that this is realistic skin. Skin is never just one tone, to changes based on the thickness of the kin in a given area, the warmth of the light and the curvature or the part of the skin. That said, I couldn’t be happier with how well the saturation and skin tones changes are showing up here. And it’s weird things that are popping up at me too. Like her elbow. Her elbow here looks like it’s coming up off the page and away from Mewtwo. 

The hair was a choice that needed to be made. Another element of Mewtwo that needs to be referenced is the tail. As I didn’t want to disrupt the look of dat ass, I decided to reference it by the hair, black fading into pink at the ends because that’s how Mewtwo’s tail shades down.

Of course, there is one particular thing that needs to be spoken of. Yes, I’ve gone far more anatomical with this piece than I have with a lot of my other pieces. Part of the reason is that this pose lends itself to that naturally. You can’t really spread your legs without spreading in general. Part of it is that I just decided to say fuck it and do something more explicit. I might not do it for every piece going forward but I like it for this piece.

One thing of note. I’ve tried not to refer to Mewtwo as he or she in my notes because in the game Mewtwo, like all legendries does not have a gender. I thought that was something interesting to have in the back of my mind. Mewtwo here clearly has a feminine body but that doesn’t stop it from being either sex or non-binary as it wants

Probably a weird thing to say, but this may be the greatest ass I’ve ever painted. Sure, part of that is the model but even with a good model sometimes you can’t get it to render right. But this one rendered right. 

The foreshortening here is really strong too. I like how big her feet are in the view because the perspective is from way down low.

This also maybe the best set of feet I’ve ever painted. They have all the joints the should and look like round little piggies.

Damn, I’m really enjoying where this is right now. No always the case but here it’s definitely true. Let’s see if I can fuck that up somehow at the coloring stage.

Compositionally, I went with a back shot for two reasons. One, I haven’t done one from this angel in a while, not since my Jesse piece, I think. Two, come on, if Mewtwo is getting a sexy gajinka we all know it’s got to be all about that ass. 

Mewtwo’s Pokémon design is very much bottom heavy and, as much as possible, a gajinka is about translating the actual features of the pokemon into the human form. Fortunately, when I was thinking about who would make a good model to highlight this aspect of Mewtwo there was only one name that leapt to mind @mia_malkova . she’s definitely got the right assets to make Mewtwo proud. The only thing that I’m not sure I can bring over the Mia’s killer smile. Mewtwo isn’t known for smiling.

One of the other things I wanted for Mewtwo is its iconic three fingers. In every shot of it from the games it’s thrusting its hand at the viewer, focusing its power. This is where metal came in handy. Mewtwo in kneeling on the stage throwing up the devil horns and the crowd is loving it. I thought about doing a metal cover but I decided to go with a concert scene. Bright lights and high energy. She’s looking back at you like, what you into this?

Btw I’ve already had to correct one mistake. I accidently put an extra two on her left foot. No idea how or why but its’ fixed now.
