I threw open the doors for what gijinka I should do as my last piece of the year and there was really only one choice. Well, there were other choices but this was the one that I really wanted. Mewtwo is such an awesome steamroller of a Pokémon in the game that it was always a mainstay of my teams. As soon as I got one, my challenge was to see if I could conquer the whole league with just that one Pokémon. I did. Several times in several iterations of the game. And I’m seriously pissed off that Mewtwo isn’t in Sword and Shield. Another reason to wait for the Black and White remakes that will likely be out next year.

The other part of the prompt for this piece was Metal! And I love metal. So, the idea of bringing these two things together in one piece really tickled my creative boner. This is going to be fun.

Morrigan’s costume is kind of tripping me up. I really like the original but at the same time I want to do something original with it. The problem is that whenever I tried to make a change that I likes I either realized it was in the original or would be hidden by the hair or just wouldn’t work in the first place. The one change I could settle on was lowering the waist line of the pants to make them more like low riders and less like they’re part of the bikini top. The top itself is going to have the classic off the shoulder look so that I can attach the fur ruff to something. And I am going to be going with a fur ruff, not feathers, fuck feathers, if I never have to see another feather again it’ll be too soon. Good thing birds aren’t real.

It took a lot longer to get from step three to four than it normally would because there was just more stuff to work on. Between the boots and the wings, I think at this point I’m something like twelve hours in on this piece by now. That said, totally worth it! Look at that hair and those eyes. Part of it of course is due to the model but over all the piece is really coming together.

The hair was a process of I think three hours to get the right level of wave and curl to it. I needed to suggest that the hair was curling around the breasts as much as it was curling around itself. Not huge curls like I had with Mins but long waves undulating back and forth between one another. 

As you can see, the wings got bigger and got a touch of texture. I cannot tell you how much I prefer these wings to the ones I had for Maleficent. The one thing I’m unsure of is whether or not it sufficiently conveys the curve of the wings. The outer flaps are supposed to be the back side after all, curving back on themselves. Tried to do it with the shadow but now I’m not 100%.

The anatomy here has turned out ok so far. I’m happy with where the general highlights and form shadows are at this stage of things anyway. I worked form most of this stage of the things with the hair layer tuned off because I needed to work on her whole body and that hair was just a distraction lol. I know more than one woman who has said the same thing. Lol

As always there were a few adjustments that I needed to make in order to get this to where I wanted it to be. For one thing I turn the definition in her abs way down. Because I realized that from this angle you really wouldn’t be able to see them much and taking my cue from my model here, I don’t need to add abs to make her sexy. I just throw those in because it give me practice with rendering abs.

For the composition here, I wanted to go for something a little more brazen than I normally would. Morrigan, however, is that kind of character, Succubus remember, sex demon. She’s definitely presenting here, inviting the viewer to come closer and take a look, or a taste. For the body and face I decided to go with someone I’ve always had a crush on @heyitsapriloneil . Rally, I should have done apiece with her long before now but better late than never. She’s got just the right kind of vide to give Morrigan the right levels of cool and seductive. Plus her hair had this fantastic amount of wave to it that I’m just dying to play around with in the render.

I’ve been back and forth on the wings a couple of times. The head wings are fine but Morrigan’s back wings are different. I don’t want them to be in the way but at the same time I want them to be a presence in the shot, almost like their opening to envelop the viewer. 

The background is simple. It’s a night scene, Dark Stalkers Duh, she’s just hanging out on a balcony overlooking mountainous Scottish highlands. I like using these simple backgrounds because it provides more of blank canvas to work on.

Morrigan Aensland is one of those characters I’ve been aware of for years and years but I had no idea what she was or where she comes for a very long time. It didn’t help that Lilith exists and, every once in a while, I’d be like is this a thing I’ve seen before? I vaguely remember this being something else. Then I heard about her on a episode of Smash Fiction and I had to know more. I love how little fuck she gives how much she just wants to do her own thing despite whatever her responsibilities might be. In a human character thig might get annoying, but hey, she’s a succubus, you were looking for a nice girl?

For Moira’s outfit I wanted to go with something futuristic. It’s hard to see in silhouette but this is going to be a kid of tech suit designed to plug into stuff and give back readings. Although looking at it not I realize I may have gotten the angles of everything right. This is why it’s important to step back and look at the whole picture sometimes. I can see now that the midsection is off. The side pieces have to be at a steeper angle and the connector that goes from the pants to the top is at the wrong angle for this twist of the body. I’m going to adjust this. The other thing I’ll need to is give her an alternate outfit that’s more casual, maybe a nice sweater and jeans combo with a lab coat. Maybe no coat since I hate rendering white stuff.

The rendering on this stage of the piece have tuned out really well. The body has got enough definition to keep me happy anyway. The finishing step will bump up the contrast and really make her pop. The rendering on the other parts of her however I couldn’t be happier with. 

 I love working on slicked back shot hair like Moira has so that wars really cool and I think turned out well. It would have been fun to do it in a different style though. Like maybe without the way that it gets to a point. I didn’t add the ahoge lock because I’m still deciding gif I want it but so far, it’s looking dope.

 Her face was a lot of fun too. I went with a shiny brushed metal effect on the eye piece and I might do a chrome line finish on it after I do that background. I won’t know exactly how to do the reflections on it otherwise. Aside from that the face was just a pleasure to work with. I think I got the eyes right but I may need to knock down the color of her lips a tad. She’s not supposed to wearing any lipstick and while I didn’t add color the darkness of them may not convey that properly.

Moira’s body presents a couple of similar challenges to my Catra piece of a few weeks ago. She’s supposed to be long and lean but their postures are completely different. They’re both presenting themselves but they’re doing o in subtly different ways. Catra was more about tension. Moira is all about relaxed invitation. 

Weirdly the thing I’m happiest with here is her neck. It almost looks like a real neck under real stretch from the difference in the angle of her torso relative to her head. 

I’ve tried to do what I can to keep up the androgynous quality of both Moira and Kate moss’s appearance but it’s really a fine line to walk and it’s not going to get any easier in color. For one thing in order to make the eyes pop you have to do a lot to them in art that women in the real world do every day with makeup. Fine line but we’ll see where it ends up.

Moira is depicted as long and lanky with not much mass to her. That’s why for the form and anatomy I took inspiration from Kate Moss. I want her to have that androgynous look that models like her have. The idea is to have her be both inviting and threatening at the same time. Her pose is relaxed and the slight smile on her face is soft. But you can’t ignore the metal piece around her eye. Or what’s going on behind her. 

 This piece is going to have couple of things going on with it. Moira in the front of course but behind her is going to be her lab. Her lab with all its bits and bobs and terrifying things in incubation chambers. I want her to be an invitation into something dark and dangerous. You might get answers to some of life’s biggest questions, you might provide them. Let’s see what the experiments reveal.

The lore of overwatch has a bunch of really interesting personalities and archetypes. Personally, I’m usually drawn to the dark side of the street. Moira is one of those characters that I find intriguing. She’s brilliant in a way that defies all convention of right and wrong. Or, not exactly, she has a sense of right and wrong but it’s just not the same as most people. For her, right is what advances knowledge and science, wrong is anything that gets in the way. There’s something compelling about that to me. Which is probably why it’s a good thing I’m not a scientist.

After seeing trailers for the movie, I know that when it came to the costuming I wanted to go with something like the battle outfit she wears, that sleek asymmetrical second skin that doesn’t cover her whole body but is clearly designed for mobility. Which makes sense if the person wearing it has wings and should primarily be fighting from the air. I’m going to give it more of a metallic texture so it looks like something made for combat but that’s what I’m going for.

The wings have turned out ok. I’m not going to be 100% Happy with them but this is like hair. I won’t be happy until I’ve done a few hundred different versions and I’ve abandoned the tutorials I’m using to do them and figured it out on my own method. For now, this is ok but like always I look forward to my next piece.

This step is a mix of highs and lows and ehhhhhhh. 

Ok first the ehhhhhhh. The skin is right at this point in the process. I’m not totally happy with it because I know where it will be once I make adjustments to the Soft Light layer and mix everything down but right now it’s in that transitional phase that just doesn’t pop to me.

The headpiece. Dammit, but I love the headpiece! Look at her hors and the leathery texture of it! It’s gorgeous! Almost makes for not letting me do hair like I love to do. Almost.

And the low. The wings. I had to bring in an set of PNG wings from another image to get the shapes right. It looks fine I suppose, and it’ll look better once I get a lot more work into them but right now they’re not speaking to me. 

So yeah, I’m frustrated that it isn’t done and perfect yet and still in a transitional phase.

Ok, so I changd the face. Might be little hard to tell in this version of the image, but I slight rotated her head a bit more towards camera and I changed the mouth a touch to make the smile a little more sultry. Aaaaaaand I may change it again to a wider smile. Really what I need to do is just have interchangeable faces or something.

Anyway, I like how the body is turning out so far. She’s looking relaxed and soft, something hard o pull off in these flying shots. The really hard ptary however is going to be the wings. Feathers are a nightmare to render realistically and I have almost no practice. I’ll have to see what I can do with them but it’s going to be s struggle.

I want the composition of this piece to be something special. The idea is that Maleficent is soaring free through the sky, something that we only get to see at the end of the original movie. This is a relaxed almost lazy kind of pose. This isn’t her flying into battle this is just her flying because flying is fun. To that end her back is softly arched and her wings are spread out in an almost backflip kin of maneuver.

I’m admittedly not the best at architecture but I had to throw something like that in there. She needs to be somewhere between earth and sky with a lot of that sky adding a brightness to the piece. By contrast she is going to be fairly dark. Her wings, hair and outfit are going to be in shades of black, meanwhile Maleficent herself will be fairly pale. I want to do a lot to play with dark and light in this image. Maybe I’ll have the sun coming up over the mountain.

I’m not a huge fan of modern Disney, mostly because I grew up watching the animated stuff and it’s kind of meh for me to see basically the same thing just live action isn’t that much fun for me. That said, I loved Maleficent, it scratches that itch in the back of my brain that got started the first time I saw Wicked. The re-contextualization of the villain of the story into the role of protagonist is just awesome. Especially when, like there, the text isn’t saying they didn’t do bad things, but that they had reasons for doing those bad things. So much fun.

So, the skin tone changes worked out really well. I love where they ended up in terms of contrast and definition. You can’t see it here but trust me it looks good.

The suit is going to be a thing. Mostly becuase designing something like this is not as easy as it would seem. I wear a suit every day to work and I can tell you it moves weirdly. Especially in this position. I like where it is right now but I may also change some things around. Specifically, I might get rid of the shirt and just close the jacket. Or I might do both as variants of now another. I might throw a bra in there. Lots of options as to what to do with a woman wearing a suit.

I’m of two minds at this point. I’m happy with how the anatomy has turned out, but I’m not thrilled about the saturation of the skin. Then again, the skin is supposed to be a little saturated. She’s a tabby after all. I will need to do a few more adjustments to the skin and see what that does to the piece. There’s also that weird dark patch of skin on her chest. It’s supposed to be the curvature of her chest going into the clavicle but I didn’t realize it was that dark. I’ll need to knock that back a touch so it doesn’t look so dab. I may be complaining at the moment but it’s not a hard complaint. I’m over all good with where it is at this stage. 

The hair is always something I pay attention to because it’s one of my favorite things to paint. How a character styles their hair says a lot about them. I’ll going with something a little sleeker on top, she’s running her hand through it an pulling it back after all. But Catra has relatively shaggy hair, even done up, and that’s going to have to come through from underneath and with the tufts of hair that comes down the sides of her face and fade to white. I’ll go back and add a few off wild streaks too, to help it out. 

Her heterochromatic eyes were really interesting to work on because I used two different techniques to work on them. For her blue eye I went with my usual coloring technique for eyes. For the yellow one, I went with my gold coloring technique to give it some pop and flair. In the modern cartoon her sclera are fully the color they want to show, like a real life cat, but in the 80’s cartoon, my personal visual preference, she has white sclera. I did them with white sclera before I remembered but what I think I’m going to do is color the white in a bit with a luminescent brush but I’m also going to define the irises a bit more, see how that goes. I like the idea of having her eyes be somewhere between human and cat.

Speaking of gold, I went with golden inlays for the stripes on her arms and legs. I know they’re darker in the cartoon but I couldn’t resist giving her a little bling to liven her up. This was partly inspired by seeing what happens with the stripes one I added form coloring to them, and partly after seeing those gilded stretch marks women we sporting after Ashley Graham did show off her baby stretch marks. May add a few more on her sides to show she’s got a few on her back as well but I’ve never seen official art saying she has them there, so I may not.

The anatomy on here is going to be very particular. The light here isn’t going to be very strong in any one direction. It’s going to be more diffuse than that. This is a “prom” but it’s really more of a club space. That means flashing lights, bounced a hundred times over by other flashing lights. Which in turn means that the anatomy won’t be particularly defined in any one area. That said, I’m happy with what I’ve been able to do in making Catra seem long and lanky. She’s a high class alley cat so she should look lithe and deadly.

Going through I did notice that I missed the bellybutton. No idea how. I was just going through and somehow I missed doing the belly button. It happens but it’s one of those annoying, why am I such an idiot things.

Catra (She-Ra and the Princesses of power) WIP 2

Since I like to lean into the harder edges of things, I decided to go with a very particular composition for Catra. I angled the camera upward and positioned her body in a relaxed but flaunting pose. Her eyes are hooded and looking down, her leg ever so slightly forward in a half step. I want Catra to be a threat but not just a physical one. She’s a sexual threat. I want her to be saying, if I want you, I can have you. In my head she’s saying this to Adora but you can feel free to put yourself there if you like.

Of course, I had to set it the prom episode too. The piece is going to be filled with a diffuse purple and yellow lights, villain colors. The main lighting of the piece if going to be mostly top down as if she’s in a spotlight. Besides the drapery and the tables, there’s going to be a crowd partying the background. This isn’t actually a princess ball, nope this has become a real raucous club thing and you can only hope to survive. Did Catra spike the punch? Did she just lossen everyone’s inhibitions with her natural sexual aura? Who knows? Just enjoy what’s happening.
